CAUTION FOR OPTICAL PICKUP REPLACEMENT /
DISASSEMBLY AND ASSEMBLY OF MECHANISM
1. Do not turn adjustment screws 1 to 5.
(If any of them is turned by mistake, their adjustment is
required. This should be performed on the Mechanism
ass'y.)
2. Remove completely the shorting solder from the LD of the
FPC.
3. Wear a grounding band during work.
1. Removing the upper frame
(1) Remove the two screws.
(2) Take out the Upper board upward.
2. Removing the traverse block
(1) Remove the two balance springs.
(2) Pull the traverse block straight upward to remove.

3. Removing the Servo PB ass'y
(1) Disconnect the FPC from the optical pickup and attach a
shorting pin to the terminal.
(2) Disconnect the sensor FPC, motor FPC and motor wire
from the connectors.
(3) Remove the screw.
(4) Move the optical pickup position in the direction of the
arrow (this prevents the SW from damage when taking out
the Servo PB ass'y).
(5) Lift section A slightly and, while releasing the engagement
of the hook of the traverse block, take out the Servo PB
ass'y.
4. Removing the Optical Pickup ass'y
(1) Remove the screw.
(2) Take out the Power Motor ass'y.
(3) Move the optical pickup position in the direction of arrow
1, lift it upward and remove it in the direction of arrow 2.
5. Removing the drive shaft
(1) Remove the screw.
(2) Take out the Nut Piece ass'y.
(3) Pull out the drive shaft.
6. Removing the clamper arm
(1) Push the spring hook in the direction of arrow q to
disengage it.
(2) Lift the clamper arm in the direction of arrow e, and then
move its position in the direction of arrow w and pull out
the left boss of the Traverse board from the clamper arm.
(3) While maintaining the current overall positioning, slide the
clamper arm in the direction of arrow q and pull out the
right boss of the Traverse board.
7. Removing the spindle motor
(1) Remove the two screws.
(2) Take out the spindle motor upward (taking care not to
damage the FPC).

1. Attaching the spindle motor
(1) Attach the spindle motor on the Traverse board by
engaging the spindle motor frame from the bottom, and
tighten the screws in the order of a then b.
(Caution)
• When attaching the spindle motor, place the FPC outside
the Traverse board in advance.
• Do not use screws that have been used before.
(If debris of the adhesive agent penetrates inside the screw
sections, the loosening prevention effect of the screws will
be lost.)
2. Attaching the clamper arm
(1) Apply grease on the clamper arm (on the areas indicated
as hashed areas in the figure above).
(2) Fit the clamper arm spring around the clamper arm shaft.
(3) Insert the clamper arm shaft into the hole on the right of
the clamper arm. Then slide the clamper arm toward the
left to insert the shaft of the Traverse board into the hole
on the left.
(4) Lift the L side of the clamper arm spring as shown in the
figure below (Arrow A), and hook it on the hashed area on
the Traverse board.
3. Attaching the Optical Pickup ass'y
(1) Apply grease on the drive shaft (on the areas indicated as
hashed areas in the figure above).
(2) Pass the drive shaft through the optical pickup and clamp
the Nut Piece ass'y using the screw.
(Caution)
• The optical pickup should be attached so that it is positioned
near the center of the drive shaft. (This is to prevent
damage due to running up onto SW2.)
• Pay attention not to touch the optical pickup lens.
• Do not apply grease to other areas than specified.

4. Attaching the Optical Pickup ass'y
(1) Apply grease to the two positions (hashed areas) shown
above.
(2) Insert the Optical Pickup ass'y into the hole on section A
by catching the rail of the Traverse board as shown in
"Side View of Section B."
(3) Insert the Power Motor ass'y in section E.
(4) Tighten the screw.
(Caution)
• When attaching the Optical pickup ass'y, take care against
deformation of the plate spring.
• Do not apply grease to other areas than specified.
5. Attaching the Servo PB ass'y
(1) Insert the motor wire connector into the Servo PB ass'y.
(2) Insert the projection on the Servo PB ass'y into the hole
on section B, then insert it below the hook and insert into
the positioning pin.
(3) Tighten the screw.
(4) Insert the spindle motor FPC and sensor FPC all the way
into their connectors. (The sensor FPC should be passed
below the PB ass'y.)
(5) Remove the shorting pin and
insert the optical pickup FPC all
the way into the connector to lock
it firmly.

6. Attaching the traverse block
(1) Fit the two floating springs F and floating spring R
according to the profile of the insulator.
(2) Drop alcohol in holes A, B and C of the insulator as shown
in the figure.
(3) Before the alcohol dries up, insert the shafts A, B and C
into holes A, B and C respectively. (Make sure that each
shaft is inserted all the way as shown in "Cross-Section of
Insulator" on the right.
(4) After inserting the shafts, lift the Traverse board by about
3 mm to ensure that the shafts do not easily slip out of the
insulator. (See figure on the bottom right.)
(5) Hook the two balance springs across claws A1 and A2
and across claws B1 and B2.
7. Attaching the upper frame
(1) Attach the upper frame by engaging
the claws on the left and right of the
upper frame into the holes on the left
and right of the main frame as shown
by the arrow in the figure on the
right.
(2) Tighten the two screws.

✽ With PSs (photosensors), ON refers to the
condition in which the light to it is blocked
by the disc and OFF refers to the condition
in which the light is not blocked.
✽ With switches, ON refers to the condition
the switch is pressed and OFF refers to the
condition in which it is not pressed.
Appearance of Mechanism
Description of Sensors and Switches
1) Disc loading
When a disc is inserted through the insertion slot, the disc is
detected by PS1 or PS3 turning ON, and the power motor
starts rotation in the loading direction. Completion of disc
loading activates a trigger for moving the control slider toward
the front. This turns the Loading completion SW ON and the
loading operation is completed.
2) Disc size detection
After SW1 (Loading completion SW) goes ON;
the disc is a 12 cm disc if PS4 is ON;
the disc is a 8 cm disc if PS4 is OFF.
3) Disc play mode
The following operations are performed before playing a disc.
(1) Initialization of the optical pickup position
(2) Detection of disc presence/absence
(3) Activation of spindle motor
(4) Automatic adjustment of servo characteristics
(5) Reading of TOC information
(6) Skip to the track to be played
(7) Disc playback
4) Disc ejection
8 cm disc:
The power motor is rotated in the disc
ejecting direction. It is stopped when the
disc has been ejected until both PS3 and
PS4 go OFF.
12 cm disc: The power motor is rotated in the disc
ejecting direction. It is stopped when the
disc has been ejected until PS2 goes OFF.
5) Disc ejection detection
The ejection of disc from the mechanism is detected when
PS1 goes OFF after completion of disc ejection.
Is PS1 remains ON after completion of disc ejection, the
unit loads the disc automatically in about 10 seconds and
enters the standby mode after it. (Self-loading)

1. Disc detection mechanism
When a disc is inserted, PS1 or PS2 goes ON, the power
motor starts rotation and the rubber rollers carry the disc
inside the mechanism.
2. 8 cm/12 cm loading mechanism
When a 12 cm disc is inserted, the rubber rollers pushes it
against the disc guide surface and transport it inside the
mechanism. During the transport, the disc comes above the

When a 8 cm disc is inserted, the rubber rollers pushes it
against the disc guide surface and transport it inside the
mechanism. The disc stops when it hits the two 8 cm stopper
bosses on the clamper arm.
8 cm disc
If the disc is inserted from the edge, it hits one of the
bosses, is guided toward the center by the boss and stops
when it hits both of the bosses.
3. Loading/ejection mechanism
(Drive of loading gear train and movement of slider)
(1) The rotation of the power motor is transmitted to the
loading gear train.
(2) When the disc reaches the specified position, it hits the
trigger lever on the clamper arm. When it is transported

further, it turns the trigger lever, moving the rack base
on the control slider in the direction of arrow A.
(3) The moved rack base is meshed with reduction gear C
that is already rotating, and the rack base is moved further
in the direction of arrow A to move the control slider.
(Roller arm escaping operation)
(1) During the movement of the control slider, the cam groove
on it pushes up the R-side arm. This rotation also rotates
and pushes down the roller arm linked with the R-side
arm.
(Disc clamping operation)
(1) When the control slider moves, the projection on the
control slider, which supports the clamper arm from the
bottom, is also moved. When the projection moves away
from the clamper arm, it lowers and clamps the disc.

Completion of loading operation
(1) When the control slider moves further in the direction of
the arrow, it pushes the Loading completion SW, which
results in the detection of loading completion.
(From loading gear train to Pickup drive gear train)
(1) After the loading completion detection, the power motor is
rotated further.
(2) When the control slider reaches the specified position, it
pushes the loading hook, which then starts rotation. (Fig.
a)
(3) The rotation of the loading hook unlocks the switching
lever, which has been locked by it so that the lever
meshes with the loading gear train. The switching lever is
then rotated by the loading hook in the direction of the
arrow and is meshed with the TR bevel gear.
(4) The switching lever is locked by the traverse hook, so the
rotation of the power motor is transmitted to the pickup
drive gear train, making it possible to move the pickup.
(From pickup drive gear train to Loading gear train)
(1) The rotation of the power motor is transmitted to the
traverse gear train.
(2) The pickup is moved to the innermost position.
(3) At the innermost position, the pickup pushes the traverse
hook, which then starts rotation. (Fig. b)
(4) The traverse hook unlocks the switching lever, which has
been locked so that it meshes with the traverse gear train.
The switching lever is then rotated by the traverse gear in
the direction of arrow (2) and is meshed with the reduction
gear.
(5) The switching lever is locked by the loading hook, so the
rotation of the power motor is transmitted to the loading
gear train, making it possible to move the slider.

(Upward movement of roller arm)
(1) After the optical pickup has moved to the inner position,
the drive mechanism switching as described above occurs
and the control slider is moved.
(2) During the movement of the control slider, the cam groove
on the slider pushes the R-side arm downward, thereby
moving up the roller arm that is linked with the R-side arm.
(Disc unclamping operation)
(1) When the control slider moves, the projection on the slider
pushes up the clamper arm to unclamp the disc.
(Disc ejection operation)
(1) When the roller arm is moved up and disc is unclamped,
the disc is caught between the rubber rollers and disc
guide and the disc ejection starts.
(Election completion)
(1) The control slider moves until it hits the stopper on the
Traverse board.
(2) The power motor rotation ejects the disc further and;
12 cm disc: The power motor stops when PS2 is turned OFF.
8 cm disc:
The power motor stops when both PS3 and PS4
are turned ON.

4. Floating lock mechanism
(Floating unlocking operation)
(1) The movement of the control slider pushes down the roller
arm. This rotates the L-side arm and releases the locking
with the main frame.
(2) When the L-side link, which is linked with the L-side arm,
moves toward the front, the L-lock cam is rotated. This
causes the projection on the lock cam to escape from the
upper frame and releases the locking.

Right side
(1) The movement of the control slider after disc loading
causes the projections on the control slider to escape
from the projections on the upper frame. This unlocks
the traverse mechanism, which is moved up by the
force of springs and puts the mechanism in the floating
condition.
Right side
(Floating locking)
(1) The movement of the control slider pushes up the roller
arm. This rotates the L-side arm and its engagement with
the main frame restricts the front-rear movement of the
traverse block.
(2) The rotation of the L-side arm moves the L-side link, which
is linked with the L-side arm, toward the rear and rotates
the L-lock cam. This brings the projection on the lock cam
in contact with the main frame and pushes down the
traverse block to restrict its up-down movement.
Left side
(1) The movement of the control slider due to ejection
causes the projections on the control slider to contact
the projections on the upper frame. This pushes down
the traverse mechanism and restricts its up-down
movement.

5. Play mode
Insulators F and R, floating springs F and R, and balance
springs (two of which are provided on the front of the
mechanism but not shown in the figures) floats the traverse
block for disc playback.
